Healthy Sausage

Low Sodium Maple Turkey Sausage

With this heart healthy sausage recipe for maple flavored breakfast sausage, you not only eliminate added salt but you use turkey to help reduce the fat content.

Just like with other low salt recipes, it's important to use the freshest spices possible to ensure great flavor.

This is a small batch recipe because the sausage is best if it's eaten in the first 2 or 3 days after it is made.

  • 2 lbs lean ground turkey

  • 3 tablespoons real maple syrup

  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

  • 1/2 teaspoon rubbed sage

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/8 teaspoon mace

  • 1/8 teaspoon allspice

Add all the spices and the maple syrup to the ground turkey and mix well by hand.

This sausage will taste even better if you cover it and let it rest in the refrigerator for at least an hour after it is mixed.

As a matter of fact, this is a good sausage to make in the evening and use the next morning for breakfast.

I find it easiest to purchase ground turkey from the supermarket for this recipe. If you do decide to grind your own, use the fine plate on your meat grinder and be very careful of cross contamination.

This is made as a bulk fresh sausage, and should be formed into patties for frying as needed. The 2 lb recipe will feed a hungry throng of breakfast eaters, and it's not only good tasting but good for them!
